I just came across this fascinating agency in Berlin: http://www.schein-berlin.de
These guys create all sorts of fictional artefacts: e.g. packaging of products that never really existed, newspapers for film productions, fictional stamps and labels, everything. Amongst many other productions and projects I found out they had been working e.g. for "Bourne Supremacy". I like their work because it is such a special synthesis of Art and Graphic Design. Highly recommended. Unfortunately their website is only in German (yet).

What I want to say to you all is thank you for being out there and keeping this flame burning. I don't know if I"ll really be able to come through here a lot over the next 6 months, but have been waiting long enough to sign on and say hello to you all. I love what shapeshifters represents and I feel it is a message for our future. I'm happy to participate, even if it's not much until the spring of '08. I'll have so much new work coming out by then that I don't even know where to begin, but I'll try and keep you posted.

Much love to you all.
I'd like to introduce a young graphic designer from Cape Town: Ruan Deyzel. I stumbled across Ruan via the Smashing Magazine Logo Contest which he won with a simplistic yet impact-strong design (see below). The logo contest page features interesting designs from other designers, too.

So if you're looking for a great graphic designer who does the web2.0 touch, Ruan might be your man.

While visiting Los Angeles in January, I thought, "why not connect with the grahic design community of the city?"
I've signed up for a business lecture for graphic designers organized by the AIGA (American Institute of Grapic Arts) and it was a great experience. This series of lectures is geared towards the creative worker, who studied art, but not business. Not did I only learn a lot, Errol Gerson was a great speaker and offered to answer all remaining or future questions via email. He continues his lectures in February and March. Don't miss them if you are in town!
Nomad Soul Records is looking to collaborate with a web designer. We are interested in expanding the confines of what great web design can be. We seek an artist/designer. We'd like the Nomad Soul site to be slightly experimental, fresh, aspects of texture, and motion. The site would feel like a world unto itself. Of course it's primary function is to sell, but equal to this is building community. It could almost have the feel of promoting a film and using filmic cinematic qualities in the site itself. It could be edgy and inviting. Playing with ideas of mood, moving fonts, ghostlike shadows, mystery. All the while being very easy to navigate and intuitive. We are offering a set fee. Please contact us at: russelw@xtra.co.nz

Hi everyone,

Just to introduce a project I'm working on, and to invite you to take part.

Kind regards,
Hein Bekker (Coordinator)

...

ICEBOX is a collaborative festival of contemporary creativity in audio/visual art. With the focus on the electronic, open and South African, the festival combines music, film, video and interactive media through a programme of screenings, multimedia performances, club nights, workshops and an online exhibition.

Liquid Fridge, partnered by MTKidu and rustpunk, presents ICEBOX 02 in February/March 2007 in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, South Africa. The festival is calling for the participation of established and emerging South African and international artists and professionals working in a broad range of disciplines including electronic music, sound art, digital film, animation, photography, video art, graphic design, interactive and generative media, Net art, video game art and electronics.

Supported by CAPE Africa Platform and Creative Commons South Africa.

Web: http://www.liquidfridge.co.za/icebox

Screenings

ICEBOX is open for submissions of short-form narratives, documentaries, music videos, experimental motion graphics and recorded visual performances. Visit http://www.liquidfridge.co.za/?p=icebox_02_screen for further information and the entry form.

Online Exhibition

Interactive media, generative art, Net art and other forms using Director, Flash or Java software, as well as digital photography, illustration and graphic design work, may be entered for the online exhibition and a live presentation at ICEBOX. Visit http://www.liquidfridge.co.za/?p=icebox_02_web for further information and the entry form.

Club Nights

The ICEBOX sound system promises a selection of DJ'd and live retro-tech-future-funk rather difficult to define. Overlay a hearty serving of videoboxing and performing pixels, and you have an eclectic evening where the notions of "underground" and "overground" are irrelevant. We are looking for DJ sets, band and electroacoustic performances, VJ/video performances, and various styles in between. Visit http://www.liquidfridge.co.za/?p=icebox_02_events to learn more.

Workshops

To facilitate exchange between the traditional creative practices and electronic subcultures, ICEBOX invites presentations, performances, demonstrations, discussion panels and hands-on experiments in all disciplines. Visit http://www.liquidfridge.co.za/?p=icebox_02_events to learn more.

Just to introduce a project I'm working on, and to invite you to take part.

Kind regards,
Hein Bekker (Coordinator)

Theory One is an illustrator and designer in Cape Town. He has a good network of designers and street artists involved in various collaborations.

Theory One's illustrations mostly portray characters influenced by his urban surroundings and cultural stereotypes. The range of subject material that he approaches can also be diverse, but the consistency in style of linework and colour make him a distinctive illustrator.

http://www.theoryart.co.za/

Theory One's interactive design work is influenced by similar sources but can be more diverse in style and approach depending on clients' brief and requirements. As you can see from the portfolio examples, his best client work tends to be aimed at the urban market:

Sao Paulo was really inspiring for the fresh eye: Of course we also get in Vienna direct mailings from Pizza restaurants promoting their home delivery menue.
In Sao Paulo these pizza menues have a nice added value: The mailing is at the
same time a fridge magnet. Small size, great idea. It is so simple. Why did no
one think of it here?
