Two years after the Shapeshifters world seeding tour was started in January 2006 we have completed this amazing endeavor. Eric Poettschacher, the co-founder and mastermind of Shapeshifters met creatives on all five continents, discussed the challenges of effective global peer-to-peer communication in the creative community and shared the bigger picture behind Shapeshifters. The last part of the world tour ended Monday May 12 after coming back from India, Japan and China. A big thank you to everybody who has contributed to this magical-mystery tour. It made Shapeshifters the only network in the world that was hand-seeded by meeting and connecting the most amazing creatives. As a matter of fact some of those people were so outstanding that we have decided to do a film documentary on them. Watch out for more.

Just in case you plan to visit Mumbai from abroad here is how you might become an extra at a Bollywood production. Stroll down Colaba Causeway and chances are you will be approached by a local casting agent who is trying to find foreign models for a current production. I was an extra yesterday and really enjoyed the experience with other people from Finland, Uzbekhistan, USA, Canada, South Africa, Belgium, Turkey, Iran. It was hard work though: 15 hours hanging around on the set - but eventually we had our appearance. So watch out for the musical "Yuvraaj" with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. Ah yes, I am the one at the table at the left with the glitter suit and red tie enjoying the dance show in the party scene.

A good friend from New Zealand pointed me towards this extraordinary address: http://www.48hours.co.nz. 48 hours is New Zealands largest film competition. Over 400 teams take part in what the organizers call "the most intense film school on the planet". This is how it works: Every team has exactly 48 hours to create an entire short film - including writing, shooting and editing! These shorts can be seen in cinemas and are judged be the audience right away. The best ones compete in a live TV final. I have to see this once I go back to Auckland.

Nigeria has the third largest film industry in the world. It has established itself in less than thirty years. Where has it come from? How has it grown so quickly? I know that this is a small budget quick turn around business, budgets per film are around $10,000 and films completed in three weeks.

Does anyone have any contacts from Nollywood who might be able to explain the history and operations of the industry?
Hello!

I am currently preparing my animated debut short film and I am looking for ways of funding. The project is already partly funded by reference supplies of the FFA (german federal film funding board) but unfortunately that won't suffice for the whole production.
Nevertheless the project is going to be really low-budget (<50.000€) and really short (about 5min). I have just finished the first draft of the script and will spend the next few months refining the script and doing the visual development. I also have a first rough calculation based on a production time of 9 months (I will be doing most things on my own). If someone is interested I can always email you a brief project description and/or script.
Please check my website www.frederikring.com to get an idea of the kind of work I am doing as well as films.frederikring.com for watching my previous shorts.
I am based in Stuttgart, Germany, but do not hesitate if you're from abroad.

Thanks, Frederik

Proboscis hosted a talk by David Vadivaloo last night. David put together us-mob with the town camp communities of Alice Springs. David's background is as a human rights lawyer, conflict mediator and film maker.

us-mob is a television series with indigenous actors and a storyline relating to contemporary indigenous culture. notably the endings are only available oneline and the content onliine is extensive. us mob has just been agreed as curriculum content in 4,000 schools in Australia and MTV are interested in the format (as are various folks in South Africa, Brazil, New York etc etc).

it's phenomenal work, take a look www.usmob.com.au

A Kiwi made film http://www.blacksheepthemovie.com premiered in Auckland last night, which by itself is not news. What's interesting is what the film embodies: mental real estate. The tagline is "There are 40 million sheep in NZ. And they're pissed off". Kiwis are sick of being known as the sheep capital of world, so its a great idea to turn the thing on its head and play to the stereotypes. We've done a story about the director Jonthan King. http://idealog.co.nz/articles/features-march-april-2007/mons...
His story may interst you. But I think the idea of mental real estate is one that has universal resonnance. Check it out.

peacefulfish in Berlin is a finance and distribution company for the content industry. They have two conferences coming up in Feb 07 that sound good: Global Film Financing in Berlin and Global Mobile Content Financing in Barcelona. I've never worked with them but have heard them speak at conferences and they sound like a valuable resource.
Hi Everyone. justAthot is a company created here in Johannesburg to create place for coming together for artists to meet, exchange ideas and speak as one voice without doubt or fear.

The priority right now is our book lounge. We have started a collection of books including African literature, international politics, motivational and poetry books.

We are looking for interaction. We have not really come across Science Fiction books and would be happy if anyone could send us books as we are an NGO.

Anyone interested in putting a hand in assisting us in this great adventure, please come forward and donate any sort of book that you may feel would be relevant for this cause.

We hope this project encourages South African youth to have confidence in their own culture, know who they are, dream and start to persue their dreams like everyone else in the world. We would appreciate donations from international sources as after all, they are looking at the issue of our struggle as outsiders.

If anyone has anything to send us:

quotes can be sent to: mdubana@ananzi.co.za

books can be sent to this address:

Stephen Bantu Biko's vision was to free a black man from the enslavement of their own minds, show him how unique he is and encourage him to take on the world.

just to throw a cliche on you people:
"A READING NATION IS A WINNING NATION". I believe this statement is valid.
