I was recently in The Garden of Unearthly Delights, a wonderful area set up in the parklands of Adelaide for the fantastical Fringe Festival.
Within the space of commercial and creative activities and individuals, was a wonderful open dancefloor, Silent Disco.
It is a couple of DJs from Netherlands, who thought up this idea when they were DJing at an event where they were 'complained apon' due to noise levels.
Silent Disco gives you headsets and you dance to your hearts content, choosing the music of either of the 2 dj's playing. Its wonderful to watch people dancing about (so entertaining!!) while still carrying out a conversation - and all under the milky way! (or wherever you choose actually).
If you are having a festival - anywhere - consider this!
A good friend from New Zealand pointed me towards this extraordinary address: http://www.48hours.co.nz. 48 hours is New Zealands largest film competition. Over 400 teams take part in what the organizers call "the most intense film school on the planet". This is how it works: Every team has exactly 48 hours to create an entire short film - including writing, shooting and editing! These shorts can be seen in cinemas and are judged be the audience right away. The best ones compete in a live TV final. I have to see this once I go back to Auckland.

Twice a year a special artists event is held here in Tokyo. It is claimed to be the largest art festival in Asia with over 40,000 visitors and 6,000 exhibitors. I have had the pleasure of working directly with Design Festa's team. During the last event I met many artists from all over the world. Some of them have created a successful business with their art, and that success was all thanks to Design Festa and the opportunities it provided for them. Design Festa is a free and open event with no restrictions on participation provided all work is original. Artists rent a space from Design Festa and display/sell their work from that space. It's like giant Flea market of art. It is certainly an amazing place to build networks and business opportunities in Japan.

Foreign exhibitors usually have difficulty with getting a proper visa from the Japanese government. This creates accessibility issues for foreign exhibitors. Many of those who exhibit are living in Japan.

nothingGrinder participated in Design Festa Vol. 18 were invited to show our video work in Design Festa Vol. 25 ( the most recent ). I promote this event because I have heard some amazing success stories from some of the artists who exhibit. I hope this information is useful. For more information about Design Festa visit http://www.designfesta.com.

I'm looking for crossovers (between different art disciplines, or between an art discipline and another field of work) that have been created within cultural incubators. I would really like to talk to the initiators of these crossovers, and find out what stimulated the creation.
The reason is that I'm doing research on this subject for my Master thesis on Arts Management at the Utrecht School of the Arts.
Also If you are not an initiator yourself but you do know about an interesting/inspiring crossover project, please let me know.

Greetings all, my name is Patrick and I play in an indie/electronica band called Letting Up Despite Great Faults. Based out of Los Angeles, we have recieved quite a bit of positive attention in our relatively short career, with songs being featured on national radio and television. Some bands we are often compared to are The Notwist, Lali Puna and the Postal Service. We are trying to gain more recognition overseas, ultimately hoping to tour, and I was hoping that the shapeshifters community could help me get in touch with any appropriate organizations or people that would be interested in helping us out. i.e. European festivals, magazines, websites, labels, or any sort of individuals who would be interested in supporting our music. You can read more about us at our website, http://www.lettingup.com, or listen to our tunes at http://www.myspace.com/lettingup
I have a softspot for Iceland. It seems, in my experience, that the nicest people on the planet come from Iceland - and this small country seems to breed creativity. Their first real time festival Sequences will begin on 13 October. The line up is great - contemporary artists, music, performances - you can find the info on the website. Go Reykjavik!!

http://www.sequences.is/

"SEQUENCES is an international crossmedia festival in Reykjavik with the focus on time based art phenomena. The festival links contemporary visual art with other media, especially sound and performative art. It will take place in different locations in the city center of Reykjavík, accompanied by exhibitions and video/shortfilm nights. SEQUENCES will invade established spaces (museums and galleries) as well as public spaces in the city center of Iceland?s capital. A fine selection of international and local artists will participate in this unique event. The strong interrelation between visual arts, sound and performance arts is significant for Iceland?s vibrant art scene. These nexuses are accountable for specific dynamic creative processes which develop especially in time-based art projects".

Hello

I would like to know if any Shapeshifters could put me in touch with anyone running pop/rock festivals in summer 2007 in Europe with the hope of securing a slot on a stage for upcoming bands. We are an unsigned band that has a small UK following but would like to play out of the country and festivals seem to us to be a good way of playing to receptive crowds that may not have heard of us.

If you know anyone please do get in touch and I can send you a CD of our work. Alternatively you could go to our website to have a listen: http://www.thecleowhip.com.

Thanks
There is an upcoming 5 days event in Frankfurt, Germany, a international culture congress with fantastic topics and speakers (e.g. Greil Marcus, Boris Groys, Rene Pollesch, Florian Rötzer etc.). It happens between July 12 and July 16, 2006. Does anybody know somebody out there who is going there? I will attend the event on Saturday and Sunday and would love to meet some shapeshifting persons around.
Info to the congress: http://www.kulturzone.com.

I am a musician and play at many local Johannesburg venues and music festivals in South Africa. The music I write and play is 21st century folk rock. My dream is for the music to broaden by reaching into the global gig arena. So - any referrals to club owners or festival organizers in Africa, South America, Europe (pretty much anywhere actually) would be welcome. http://www.wendynew.com
