The Laptop Battle is a competitive event for musicians of all genres. It´s a fusion of sound design, composition and stage performance, and a chance for musicians to prove their skills on stage with a handy little computer and some knobs.

The Laptop Battle was invented in Seattle and several shows have been played in the USA, GERMANY, JAPAN and the UK. Now the time has come for a New Zealand battle!

"Emergence Of Projects" in Vienna

Just read on a blog about an upcoming event in Vienna that sounds truely interesting:

EOP (emergence of projects) is a network of people from art and science who organise an event called "eopicturenight 10 + 5" to present ideas in 10 pictures (20 seconds each) and pose 5 questions afterwards.

The EOP-Website features a vast range of projects, topics and people.

The next eopicturenight will take place in WerkzeugH on march 11.

I attended a club party several weeks ago in downtown tokyo. It was produced and directed by a group we are currently in negotiation with. They are big on House music and have a really strong presence in the club scene. The party I attended was a mixed media event with everything from live painting to dance performance to photography and video. They are known as Deep House Project, which anyone from San Fransisco may be familiar with. It is where DHP was created and started by Carlos Gibbs. Recently they have been expanding with both music and photography and the man in Tokyo is Laurent Novatin. He is a DJ / Photographer / Designer. These guys make great House / Club music and throw a great party. The current website is http://www.deephouseproject.com and The RedBox Project website will be coming soon.

Are there any 'Shapeshifters' planning to attend the Bioneers Conference in California this October 19-21? http://www.bioneers.org If so, I'd be keen to connect there ... "The Bioneers Conference is a dynamic, leading-edge forum, focused on practical and visionary solutions for restoring the Earths imperiled ecosystems and healing our human communities."
Alternatively .. what other great events are happening around the planet in october / november this year ... on the subject of ecological intelligence, creativity and future (collaborative) design paradigms?? Ideas??

Twice a year a special artists event is held here in Tokyo. It is claimed to be the largest art festival in Asia with over 40,000 visitors and 6,000 exhibitors. I have had the pleasure of working directly with Design Festa's team. During the last event I met many artists from all over the world. Some of them have created a successful business with their art, and that success was all thanks to Design Festa and the opportunities it provided for them. Design Festa is a free and open event with no restrictions on participation provided all work is original. Artists rent a space from Design Festa and display/sell their work from that space. It's like giant Flea market of art. It is certainly an amazing place to build networks and business opportunities in Japan.

Foreign exhibitors usually have difficulty with getting a proper visa from the Japanese government. This creates accessibility issues for foreign exhibitors. Many of those who exhibit are living in Japan.

nothingGrinder participated in Design Festa Vol. 18 were invited to show our video work in Design Festa Vol. 25 ( the most recent ). I promote this event because I have heard some amazing success stories from some of the artists who exhibit. I hope this information is useful. I'm trying to find people/design/companies/orgs/trade shows/events etc who are involved in Africa's contemporary culture and design industries.

I've come accross a couple of new mags (www.bhfmagazine.com) and someone here recommended Design Indaba which was a great find, thanks for that!

Any other recommendations on what's going on in Africa that I should know about?

looking for crossovers in the arts field

I'm looking for crossovers (between different art disciplines, or between an art discipline and another field of work) that have been created within cultural incubators. I would really like to talk to the initiators of these crossovers, and find out what stimulated the creation.
The reason is that I'm doing research on this subject for my Master thesis on Arts Management at the Utrecht School of the Arts.
Also If you are not an initiator yourself but you do know about an interesting/inspiring crossover project, please let me know.

Link UP - a network for young architects and designers in Denmark - are planning three events in 2007 inviting young architects and designers from around the world to come to Copenhagen and share your experience as an architect or designer with us.
http://www.linkup.nu The events will take place in May, September and December. We will support your journey and stay in Copenhagen, but cannot pay you anything else, as we are a non-commerciel network. Our first event in 2007 was thursday March 15th when Erich from Shapeshifters were in Copenhagen and introduce the network. Linkup is a fantastic network for designers based in Copenhagen that hosted a Shapeshifters presentation last Thursday. Eric, the founder of Shapeshifters, presented the story and the idea behind Shapeshifters. We are very much looking forward to getting more connected with the Oeresund region in the future.

Whoever has the opportunity (I don't) to be at Design Indaba 10 in Cape Town from 21 to 23 February shouldn't miss it!

It's said to be a great event. The speakers list also looks promising.

DJ Shadow Percussion Project

A Part-time US highschool teacher named Brian Udelhofen transcribed music from the heights of dj shadow, rj2d and other influential musicinas in the field of trip hop, nujazz, funk, etc. in ordert to perform the songs with his 6 high school students.

through a video he became big on the net and he plans to do a europe tour in late 2007. I made him stop-by in vienna and would need people who are interested in contributing to this event. still looking for the adequate location, etc.
