I am completely new to shapeshifters, I am a textile designer and knitting expert from Vienna.
I am mostly working in collaboration with fashion, costume or interior designers and I am always keen to meet other creatives for inspiration and interaction.

Was cleaning up my harddisc over the weekend and came across this list that i found in 2006. Still good!

Power Law 1: Don't think "new product" - think social value.

Power Law 2: Think social value before "tech".

Power Law 3: Enable human agency. Design people into situations, not out of them.

Power Law 4: Use, not own. Possession is old paradigm.

Power Law 5: Think P2P, not point-to-mass.

Power Law 6: Don't think faster, think closer.

Power Law 7: Don't start from zero. Re-mix what's already out there.

Power Law 8: Connect the big and the small.

Power Law 9: Think whole systems (and new business models, too).

Power Law 10: Think open systems, not closed ones.

Muji searches for timeless design

Muji Award is an International Design Competition that was founded almost 30 years ago in Japan. The entry period of the actual Muji Award ends on July 31, 2008. Look at http://www.muji.net/award

I just returned from 3 weeks throughout South Africa and have to share some inspirations. First of them is a little clothing shop featuring work from local South African Designers, very neat stuff, wonderful presented with some real unique items being on display. The owner, Claire Trebilcock, also has furniture items like mirrors made out of driftwood which are nice. I particularly like the clothes of "I love Leroy".

The shop is on 6 Formosa Place, Main Street, Plettenberg Bay, South Africa.

The UK has been talking about the threat from designers emerging from China. There is even an exhibition at the V+A featuring Chinese design, but is anybody commissioning work from Chinese based agenices. Do let me know if you have any expereince in this area?

In februar 2008 i was in Munich/Germany to visit the VOLVO SportsDesign FORUM on Ecodesign.The most impressive speech (for me quite influential) was the one of Michael Braungart, CEO of EPEA GmbH and MBDC McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, L.L.C. talking about cradle to cradle design. He is working and consulting on intelligent, aesthetic and eco-effective design, "holistic good design".

I asked designer Tom Dixon what he thought of environmental issues and here is his response:

What strikes me the most is that as a designer he is asking the question of whether we should make new things at all... He is suggesting that it might be better to find new ways of using old objects or distribute them in new ways.
As the creative director of Artek he urged the manufacturer to start buying back old furniture, so people don't throw it away.
Before going back into circulation every piece will get an RFID microchip, so the new owner could trace the history of the piece.

Isn't this amazing?!

wow.
i don't know how it works out in daily life and how confident the studets are, but i think just the existence of such a school project is realy cool. i got known to it, because i discovered, that a friend of mine is studying there - i'm really curious, what he is going to tell me about his expirence over there, and i defenetly want to visit this place (located in arhus, denmark). if you know any similar school/university-projects, let me know!
