The Story of Stuff

Just have a look at this: http://www.storyofstuff.com
It makes you think how we as creatives - consciously or not - contribute to this system by creating and inventing so much stuff. What´s the point of creating a more aesthetic consumerism by adding more cool designed stuff every day. What´s your thought on all that?

Yes, I've seen this site and I agree that as creatives who are designers there is a contradiction between creating beautiful stuff and polluting the planet with it. I think that we too are caught in this double bind of wanting to create and not wanting to produce stuff that will be unconsciously consumed just like the rest of the crap people buy. We too are caught in the ideology of consumerism that causes us to brand our dreams before they're even spoken of. I believe that in the coming years there will be more emphasis (there aleady is) on reinventing and reimagining objects that have already been produced. Taking the refuse of times past and using it to build functional pieces that also remind us about beauty and humanity.

I am a writer, not a designer. Though even as a writer I wonder at the necessity of cutting down trees to produce more books. I wonder about what books will look like or how they will be reinvented in the future.
