I asked designer Tom Dixon what he thought of environmental issues and here is his response:
http://www.scribemedia.org/2008/01/15/dixon-miami/
What strikes me the most is that as a designer he is asking the question of whether we should make new things at all... He is suggesting that it might be better to find new ways of using old objects or distribute them in new ways.
As the creative director of Artek he urged the manufacturer to start buying back old furniture, so people don't throw it away.
Before going back into circulation every piece will get an RFID microchip, so the new owner could trace the history of the piece.

Isn't this amazing?!

What I want to say to you all is thank you for being out there and keeping this flame burning. I don't know if I"ll really be able to come through here a lot over the next 6 months, but have been waiting long enough to sign on and say hello to you all. I love what shapeshifters represents and I feel it is a message for our future. I'm happy to participate, even if it's not much until the spring of '08. I'll have so much new work coming out by then that I don't even know where to begin, but I'll try and keep you posted.

Much love to you all.
Greetings,

ScribeMedia.Org is starting a video series on international artists and musicians and their cultural contributions to New York City, and are gathering a roster of people to interview and/or profile.

These can be anyone from established players/artists to a cab driver who also happens to be an exceptional kora player.

People who fit the bill include visual and performance artists as well as musicians. Filmmakers and documentarians fit the bill too. The point though is that they've come from abroad for whatever reason (political, economic, or just because they though NYC would be better than wherever it is they're coming from) and are trying to make it here.

If you know of individuals, groups or organizations you think we'd benefit from getting in touch with, please let us know.

You can find out more about us at http://www.scribemedia.org, and view our profile of Shapeshifters at http://www.scribemedia.org/2007/06/21/weather-report-01/
ScribeMedia.Org travels the US to capture and deliver speeches, lectures, roundtables and interviews of thoughtleaders across a broad range of subject areas that includes current events, technology, media, business and the arts. ScribeMedia provides a neutral forum for intelligent dialog and debate, uncluttered by soundbytes, instant punditry and shoutfests. The latest headline story is about Shapeshifters - and how social media goes niche.

The interview was recorded in Manhattan early April 2007 while the Shapeshifters World Seeding Tour had a stoppover in New York City. The video gives you a comprehensive 10 minute insight into previous world tour destinations and provides the big picture on what is going on behind the scenes of the website. For the first time ever.

Thank you Damon Berry in Johannesburg for providing and editing the video footage. Thank you Sasha and Michael from ScribeMedia for putting so much efforts into this feature and telling the story in such an amazing way: http://www.scribemedia.org/2007/06/21/weather-report-01/

Looking for a little architectural/design/photographic/artistic inspiration or interaction?

I recommend a visit to a pecha kucha night -- I had my first taste when one was held in Auckland recently and found a packed room of various creative worlds happily colliding, sharing and mixing.

The pre-arranged participants in pecha kucha were given the chance to tell the crowd about their design, new building, piece of furniture, photographs or thoughts they wished to share.

They did this with twenty images, and each image was shown for 20 seconds. People talked along with their slides, one guy played some music.

Presenters (and much of the audience) were from the design, architecture, photography, art and creative fields.

It was a fantastic way to see what was happening Auckland, and meet other creative people.

These events, orginally started in Tokyo by a British architect, are run around the world, and participation is encouraged by anyone who has something to show or say.

I'm sure there would be plenty of shapeshifters who would enjoy an outing to one of these!

Check out their international homepage : http://www.pecha-kucha.org/

Shapeshifters will soon be going on a seeding tour again which allows us to meet creatives face-to-face and introduce them to the world of shapeshifters. As always we plan to hold briefings in a number of places:

Boston
New York City
New Orleans
Boulder
Santa Fe
Los Angeles
Portland
Vancouver
Toronto
The Carribean (no specific destination specified yet)

Any suggestions whom we should invite to a shapeshifter briefing in these places?
Your hints are highly appreciated (and will help to shape the community based on your expectations).

for a new york styled seating and take away restaurant in central vienna we are looking for specific funding possibilites. we try to find new and different ways of raising money for opening up a restaurant. something besides banks and investment firms.

anyone any ideas of how this could be made possible without outrageous loans?
