Hi Everyone. justAthot is a company created here in Johannesburg to create place for coming together for artists to meet, exchange ideas and speak as one voice without doubt or fear.

The priority right now is our book lounge. We have started a collection of books including African literature, international politics, motivational and poetry books.

We are looking for interaction. We have not really come across Science Fiction books and would be happy if anyone could send us books as we are an NGO.

Anyone interested in putting a hand in assisting us in this great adventure, please come forward and donate any sort of book that you may feel would be relevant for this cause.

We hope this project encourages South African youth to have confidence in their own culture, know who they are, dream and start to persue their dreams like everyone else in the world. We would appreciate donations from international sources as after all, they are looking at the issue of our struggle as outsiders.

If anyone has anything to send us:

quotes can be sent to: mdubana@ananzi.co.za

books can be sent to this address:

For more information on the book lounge, call our office line:
speak with Mdu or Vuyo.
best time to call:

Stephen Bantu Biko's vision was to free a black man from the enslavement of their own minds, show him how unique he is and encourage him to take on the world.

just to throw a cliche on you people:
"A READING NATION IS A WINNING NATION". I believe this statement is valid.
Hi again everyone

*Apologies for posting this in the wrong area first time round.*

For those of you in Cape Town and Johannesburg, this year's Giving Exchange will be taking place at the following locations in September:

Johannesburg: Fri 8th to Sun 10th September
09h00 to 18h00 daily at the Fountain Court, Sandton City

Cape Town: Fri 15th to Sun 17th September
10h00 to 19h00 daily at the Market Square, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront

Each exhibition stand was designed by a Freelancentral.co.za member, who donated their time and talent. Come along and see if you can spot Phehello's work! The message from the Giving Exchange is that EVERYONE has something to give - it's not just about money.

The Expo showcases 20 non-profit organisations - what they do and what they need. It's run by The Greater Good SA (http://www.greatergoodsa.com) which is a portal for NPOs - if you want to donate money, time or stuff you can browse 'approved' organisations on their website and know that what you're donating is going to a very good (and reputable) cause.

Have a great weekend!
I am a musician and play at many local Johannesburg venues and music festivals in South Africa. The music I write and play is 21st century folk rock. My dream is for the music to broaden by reaching into the global gig arena. So - any referrals to club owners or festival organizers in Africa, South America, Europe (pretty much anywhere actually) would be welcome. http://www.wendynew.com

shapeshifters is new but it already seems to work:

through this posting i found architectafrica.com where again i stumbled across this earthbuilding workshop, which i then attended when i was in south africa for a conference.

the workshop was great - and a good opportunity to meet south african architects, contacts we need to spread the idea of open source architecture.

the cool thing: someone at that workshop even knew shapeshifters already :-)

FRIDAY SESSIONS ARE ABOUT EXCHANGING IDEAS

bring a chair
bring a friend
bring a drink

For those who still have to attend Friday Sessions, here’s a brief history and why they have come about:

History
Friday Sessions have originated in the beginning of 2005 and are conceptualised and organised by 26’10 south Architects ( Anne Graupner & Thorsten Deckler).
The Sessions are informal in nature, entirely unfunded and are held approximately every fortnight at 26’10’s offices in an old shop (heritage listed building) in Vrededorp, Johannesburg. The format varies from film screenings, exhibitions, talks, discussions and site visits. The subject matter is thus diverse and themes are work shopped by 26’10 and interested parties. 26’10 acts as “curator”, endorsing and on occasion developing content.

Purpose
The relative lack of a meaningful culture of debate on architecture, urbanism, art and design serves as a motivation to hold these events. The Sessions enable the exchanging of ideas amongst peers, colleagues, lay-people and other professionals dealing with the urban and built environment and extending a network of likeminded people in the city and across the globe.

Nature of Friday Sessions
Due to their informal nature as well as the subject matter, Friday Sessions are autonomous and spontaneous, a critical aspect we intend to retain as far as possible. Informal discussion after / during presentations are as important as the presentations.

Audience
To date Friday Sessions have gained a dedicated following with new audience members joining through informal networks of word-of-mouth and e-mail. Audiences range from 40 – 80 people per session. About 60% of audience members are architects and architectural students, whilst others are artists, film-makers, activists, lawyers, actors, teachers, IT managers, etc. The Sessions also serve as an informal educational medium for students as well as professionals.

Network
A loose local and increasingly international network of like-minded professionals has grown around Friday Sessions. To this effect Friday Sessions have been launched in the London in April 2006 by publicWORKS (Andreas Lang & Kathrin Boehm

This network has enabled like-minded people to share information and expertise as well as create confidence in the pursuit of meaningful practice of architecture, art and design.
FRIDAY SESSIONS ARE ABOUT EXCHANGING IDEAS

bring a chair
For those who still have to attend Friday Sessions, here’s a brief history and why they have come about:

History
Friday Sessions have originated in the beginning of 2005 and are conceptualised and organised by 26’10 south Architects ( Anne Graupner & Thorsten Deckler).
The Sessions are informal in nature, entirely unfunded and are held approximately every fortnight at 26’10’s offices in an old shop (heritage listed building) in Vrededorp, Johannesburg.
I recently commissioned some wire artists to create 3D elements for a corporate invite. I think the challenge was to keep the elements consistent, as all were hand-made and not always by the same craftsman. The result was brilliant and the invite was well received. Live Wire - Greenway Crafters create bead, wire, tin and batique cloth art to your specifications and come highly recommended. They are based in Johannesburg, South Africa, call Christopher on +27 (0)83 544 6390.

We recently did a documentary in Johannesburg and worked
with two young upcoming photographers (enthusiastic students).
It was a real pleasure to work with them and they came up with
great motives and portraits. I can really recommend them.
Here are their contact details:
Kutlwano Moagi (ph 076 754 18 13)
Mduduzi Ndzingi (ph 072 744 51 83)
Yeah, So was in Braamfontein, johannesburg, south africa, looking for something to eat, nothing fashionable, just ordinar pap+vleis (porrige and meat). I found a place called Moritho's Food, with a tag line saying, 'Feeding the Nation'.

A plate of food is 20 rands (US$ 3), for a drum stick, vors, t-bone steak and pap with gravy.

Thought I should share. Its located opposite the Devonshire Hotel.
The Trinity Session is an arts consultancy and creative solutions team directed by Stephen Hobbs, Marcus Neustetter and Kathryn Smith. Specialised interest areas include urban development and research, technology and the body, and web and electronic art. Projects to date have included exhibition solutions for the Apartheid Museum (Johannesburg)and the one which most inspires me is the Creative Inner City Initiative which is ongoing. this great initiative is based at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, hosting exhibitions, projects, workshops and experimental shows. you could contact Marcus Neustetter through the website http://www.onair.co.za

Hiya...

I'm just introducing myself to the group. I'm an 'artist-at-large' living in Johannesburg, and I make my living out of writing and creating corporate and industrial theatre. I run creativity seminars. I'm a mentor and coach. I love Augusto Boal's Forum Theatre.

I was at the inner city Joburg Shapeshifters meeting, and liked that idea very much indeed.

I'll be interacting more as the days go by.

Blue skies
love
Just joined up. This comunity looks interesting. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you. I am a so-called fine art photographer living in Johannesburg. So-called because the world of fine art is so precious about what is cool so often that whether one is or is not depends on fickle whims.

A major focus of my work is with dance as a performing art and what I would call an energy field. i.e. what happens beyond the stage the stage.

My web page is http://www.signsoflife.co.za - offered tentatively because it always seems not to be complete or properly representative. But there it is.
