Can anyone point me in the direction of someone such as a textiles/materials developer who might be able to help me with my research into specific textiles that deal well with impact and abrasion (such as kevlar)?

Thanks

It seems almost impossible to turn habits around. The struggle of the arts to achieve recognition or be valued, is because they pay lip service to 'art as product' rather than art as process; in that way they buy into the mercantile values, having always to be different, trendy, changing (whether well or badly). The market for artists (audiences, purchasers, sponsors) are evaluating by comparison with 'things'. This comparison is like comparing Shakespeare to cabbages, or Ikea furniture. There must be another way, to demonstrate the distinctions.
If artists of all disciplines embarked on collaborative ventures simply for their own sakes, (and perhaps initially disregarded the 'public') would the 'public' seek them out, and seek to be part of 'process' rather than product? Any ideas?

Currently we are building up with the European Academy of design a "Design Research Network" to connect design research at design universities.

Attended a very interesting lecture this week by Christina Wenjun Li founder of http://www.uigarden.net/ an online bi-lingual magazine focused on user experience. It strikes me that companies are only just beginning to take Chinese internet users seriously. There is currently a lack of communication between Chinese and Western designers. However, I am sure this is all about to change very soon. It has been estimated that within the next 15-20 years, the number of Chinese language websites will eclipse the number of English language ones.

Since the Chinese population represents about a 1/4 of the world population and as the number of broadband users grows, it would be foolish for designers intending to operate in the international community not to research and understand the habits and needs of this market. This is an interesting article on the top ten "myths" about design in China. Well worth a read.
http://www.uigarden.net/english/the-top-10-myths-truths-abou...

Here is another interesting article on usability in China. A quick look at any Chinese website and you will be struck by how distracting and chaotic it can be. There is currently a debate over whether this is because Chinese users actually prefer it this way or if they simply haven't yet settled on any specific usability preferences.
http://www.uigarden.net/english/usability-half-way-round-the...
When designing for an Eastern audience, bear in mind that due to the huge differences in culture, society and language, just because something works for a western audience does not necessarily mean it will work for the East. Tastes can be widely different. Just try finding cheese in China!

I'm loocking for several companies around the world, specially in Europe, who are dedicated to make Back-ups of data bases or another digital information.
I want to know if some of you have a experience with something like that.
On May 21 Shapeshifters was introduced to cultural entrepreneurs and students at the Utrecht School for the Arts http://www.cmkbu.nl Thank you Remy Harrewijn from http://www.flonline.nl for getting the stone rolling and eventually for bringing so many interesting minds together in one room. Photos will follow. The two presentations were truly special - including Brazilian Live music and a vivid discussion on how to use social software by the means of Shapeshifters in a more conscious way. It´s just wonderful to have so many new people from the Netherlands sharing their challenges with our growing global tribe.

Hello!

I am currently preparing my animated debut short film and I am looking for ways of funding. The project is already partly funded by reference supplies of the FFA (german federal film funding board) but unfortunately that won't suffice for the whole production.
Nevertheless the project is going to be really low-budget (<50.000€) and really short (about 5min). I have just finished the first draft of the script and will spend the next few months refining the script and doing the visual development. I also have a first rough calculation based on a production time of 9 months (I will be doing most things on my own). If someone is interested I can always email you a brief project description and/or script.
Please check my website www.frederikring.com to get an idea of the kind of work I am doing as well as films.frederikring.com for watching my previous shorts.
I am based in Stuttgart, Germany, but do not hesitate if you're from abroad.

Thanks, Frederik

Greetings all, my name is Patrick and I play in an indie/electronica band called Letting Up Despite Great Faults. Based out of Los Angeles, we have recieved quite a bit of positive attention in our relatively short career, with songs being featured on national radio and television. Some bands we are often compared to are The Notwist, Lali Puna and the Postal Service. We are trying to gain more recognition overseas, ultimately hoping to tour, and I was hoping that the shapeshifters community could help me get in touch with any appropriate organizations or people that would be interested in helping us out. i.e. European festivals, magazines, websites, labels, or any sort of individuals who would be interested in supporting our music. You can read more about us at our website, http://www.lettingup.com, or listen to our tunes at http://www.myspace.com/lettingup
Thank you very much!
