creative industries in Africa

Hi,
I am working on a great project to develop creative businesses in sub-Saharan Africa (excluding RSA). We are looking for businesses that already are, or have the potential, to export their products outside Africa. We're focussing on crafts, film, animation and arts, but are willing to look at other sectors. The project is run by the same company that worked on the Ethiopian coffee initiative whereby the Ethiopians started to trademark and brand their coffee, thereby increasing their share of the consumer price, and alleviating poverty. We are looking for individuals or businesses that would similarly benefit from some IP management to increase the value of their exports. If you know of people or businesses who fit this description, please let me know. Thanks! John

Hey John,
here are some names that might help you to get in touch with those creatives and products you are looking for. I can highly recommend all of them:

Paul Brickhill (pbrickhill@telkomsa.net) runs the Book Cafe in Harare (given the circumstances in Zimbabwe allow him to do so). Paul is connected with creatives and artists all over Africa. He might be a great person to talk to specially when it comes to Music: You find more about the book café at http://www.powerofculture.nl/en/current/2007/august/bookcafe...

Adbu Simba is another person you should contact. He is at Flame Tree Media Trust in Dar es Salaam and probably the best contact person regarding Media in Tanzania
http://www.flametreemediatrust.org

For sure you have to check out this posting from Rachel in London - if you have not done it already: http://www.shapeshifters.net/mojisola/stories/1054/

If you have any question about Fashion - anywhere in Africa - you should talk to Jan Malan at http://www.janmalan.com

Drop me a line sooner or later.
I am curious how far your project will take you.

Good luck with everything.

hi,

i met a textile artist in nigeria -from liberian. this was as far back as 2005 however.

his name was francis johnson and he gave my his cell number as 011 0 802 846 9450.

i hope it is still his number. he was a very keen and interested sort of fellow and had upon arriving in nigeria, set-up a batik school for severely disadvantaged women barely making a living on the peripheries of the marketplace. he'd be good for your project.

I think 'john' should at least acknowledge these responses. Its rather rude to make a call out through a forum such as here and then show total complete silence. One wonders what his call out was REALLY about!

Hi
Thanks for all this interest and suggestions and comments. We completed our report to the UK government in May and expected to move on to the next stage but have been delayed. Meantime, the government will soon be publishing a summary of the results. I will post again when I hear my more news.

And many apologies for not responding. I was expecting to respond to each person separately and was flummoxed by the 'anon' addresses.

Thanks again, John

Hi,
We have now published the report on IP and exports in Africa. It's available at http://www.lightyearsip.net/scopingstudy/Distinctive_values_.... We're still exploring ways we can go to the next step by finding specific African companies or export businesses that can raise their export incomes in similar ways. Thanks. John
